How To Reduce Noise in a Hotel Room

Hotels are synonymous with leisure, relaxation, and rest. Whether you are someone who is booking a stay at your favorite hotel or a commercial or business hotel owner welcoming guests, the comfort of having and providing a tranquil night’s rest devoid of unpleasant noise is one we all can agree to enjoy. At CitiQuiet, we couldn’t be more excited about sharing your peace. That’s why we’ve curated a list of eight tips, for guests and hotel owners alike, on how to reduce noise in a hotel room.

How to Reduce Noise in a Hotel Room as Guests

As a guest, we generally book our visits at a reliable hotel in hopes that it offers the best stay with little thought to potential noise disturbances. While we can hope for the best, it’s always better to plan accordingly to mitigate and reduce noise in a hotel room for ample peace and quiet.

1. Book at an Airport Hotel

While planning for your trip, consider booking your stay at an airport hotel. It might sound entirely counterintuitive to book a hotel near an area with jet engines passing by every few minutes. However, it is because airports and airplanes output a hefty amount of sound that airport hotels take the added measure to soundproof their rooms, minimizing runway rumbles and airplane engines.

2. Room Requests

Again, preparation and planning are key here. While you can’t specifically choose which hotel room you get, you can mitigate the possibility of noise disturbances by requesting general areas of the hotel that are quieter, such as higher-level rooms or rooms away from amenities. You can also request a room that avoids high foot traffic areas like the hotel lobby, rooms near elevators, and rooms facing the outdoor pool.

3. Reduce Noise in the Hotel Room

If you’ve already booked a room for your stay without the previous tips in mind, you still have time to get your backup plan in place. Another way to reduce noise in the hotel room is by bringing a white noise or sound machine to help you create a more relaxing environment for sleep. Available apps also offer similar sounds to white noise or sound machines to help you slumber peacefully at night.

4. Block Out the Sounds From the Hallway

Most newer hotels have sound transference and noise pollution in mind during construction, so most doors will have already factored in a solution for gaps. For added measure, you can also block the bottom of the doors with soft sound dampening items like a towel to prevent hallway noise from traveling into your hotel room.

How to Reduce Noise in a Hotel Room as Hotel Owners

Just as much as hotel guests enjoy a quiet stay, if you’re a hotel owner, you will also seek to provide a restful stay for your guests. When doing so, you’ll ensure that your guests are happy with their visit and will return in the future. While those who are visiting your hotel can do their part in preparing and planning their stay, you as the hotel owner can make updates to your physical site to reduce noise in a hotel room.

1. Choose the Right Flooring

Floors are one of the biggest factors when it comes to noise complaints and noise transfer in a hotel. Noise created from the floors is inevitable as it is an impact noise or noise that is caused by an object hitting a surface. These vibrations pass through the surface, ultimately transferring noise into the rooms below or surrounding it.

Fortunately, reducing noise passed through flooring is relatively easy. The best way to do this is by opting for carpet rather than hard floors. Choosing the latter will intensify the impact noise being created, but choosing the former will soften and dampen the impact sound made when guests are walking.

2. Add Furniture

Furnishing the room does not only add visual value and a relaxing ambiance for a guest’s stay, but it can also prevent sound from bouncing around the room. Adding furniture will dampen and absorb sound created within the room, ultimately minimizing noise transfer to neighboring rooms. Consider sound absorption panels and the layout of various furniture to reduce noise in a hotel room.

3. Update the Doors

If your hotel rooms need some updating to reduce noise, consider updating the doors if you haven’t already. By switching out hollow doors for solid doors, you can reduce the noise pollution that may be entering the room from the hallways. Another addition to updating the doors includes the consideration of door features like self-closing hinges. Slamming hotel doors cause vibrations that transfer through the building. Self-closing hinges prevent doors from slamming and close slowly, lessening any impact noise.

4. Add Soundproof Windows

Last, but not least, soundproofing windows. If you’re not too keen on any construction just yet, adding drapes and curtains to the room can offer a small reduction in the noise level traveling in from outside. However, this offers minimal buffering when the drapes or curtains are open.

An alternative solution is to soundproof your windows. Ground-level rooms and rooms that are facing outdoor amenities, such as pools, gain the most benefits from soundproof window installations. While higher floors may not receive as much sound pollution from busy streets, loud guests outside the building, or general noise that travel in through the windows, it’s still important to offer peace and quiet at every level.
