CitiQuiet Soundproofs New York University

If you live or work anywhere close to the Greenwich Village neighborhood in Lower Manhattan New York, you are well aware of the Washington Square Park reconstruction project. One WSP neighbor who is all too familiar with the ongoing construction is New York University, whose campus centers around the construction hubbub. In an effort to mitigate the construction noise, NYU has called upon CitiQuiet to install soundproof windows on its classroom buildings and administrative facilities.

Here is a brief update on the Washington Square Park construction projects and our progress on NYU’s soundproof window installation process.

Washington Square Park Construction

There are currently two ongoing construction projects being conducted on Washington Square Park. The first construction project, owned by the NYC Parks Department, is to repair and repair the entire perimeter sidewalk around the historic park. The NY Parks Department received almost $2 million in funding from the Mayor to start the sidewalk reconstruction project in August 2015. The construction has been done in phases and projected to be completed August 2016.

The second ongoing construction project, owned by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC), is a $9 million water main project to replace and distribute water mains, gas relocation, chute connections, sewer manholes, and amenity installations such as traffic lights, new street lighting, and bike lanes. The timeline of this project is a bit longer than NYC’s Parks Department sidewalk construction project, with an expected completion date of Summer 2018.

During the water main project construction the past several months, workers uncovered two ancient burial vaults with about two-dozen coffins that covered the floor of the vault. For more information on the vaults, click here.

NYU Noise Disturbances

To the luck of NYU students and teachers, both Washington Square Park construction project work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00am – 6:00pm. If you thought there was a break on the weekends for studying, you’re wrong; the water main project hours also call for additional construction hours on Saturday 8:00am – 6:00pm and Sunday 9:00am – 6:00pm.

It goes without saying that NYU students, teachers, and staff were in desperate need of noise and dust relief after months of incessant construction throughout their campus. In an effort to mitigate the impact of noise and protect uninterrupted learning, NYU decided to invest in soundproof windows and called upon CitiQuiet to install our soundproof windows across the entire campus affected by the Washington Square Park construction.
