Does Thicker Glass Reduce Noise

No matter where you live, you’ve likely had the unpleasant experience of outside noise entering your home. Whether it’s the neighbor out mowing their lawn first thing in the morning, the constant honking and screeching of cars on the road, or the roar of airplanes flying overhead, noise levels can have a serious impact on our health and well-being. In fact, regular exposure to high levels of noise has been linked to certain health issues, such as increased levels of stress, high blood pressure, and loss of sleep. If you are suffering from a home or workplace that is bombarded with a symphony of disruptive sounds, you’ve likely started to explore the steps you can take to reduce the impact of sound in your space. One common solution many explore is altering their windows to be more soundproof.

So just what type of glass should you be looking for in soundproof windows, and does thicker glass reduce noise? Read on to learn about the various types of window glass available and the role glass thickness plays in reducing noise.

How Thick Is Window Glass?

Glass thickness plays an important role in reducing the amount of noise that is able to travel into your home or office space. Generally, the thicker the glass used to construct your window, the better the sound insulation you will experience. This is because outside noises will have to travel further to reach inside your home. Over time, the sound wave will drop off. When selecting glass for your windows, there is a range of thicknesses to choose from. Most window systems used today will fall between 1/8” and ¼” thickness. In addition to glass thickness, the style of window and whether or not the window has air gaps will play important roles in the amount of noise that is reduced.

Types of Window Glass

The average window used in many homes, apartments, and offices will be about 1/8” thick. As you can imagine, with this thickness most windows, therefore, do a poor job of blocking out unwanted noise. For those in the process of building a home or interested in fitting their space with thicker window glass, there are other options.

Single Pane Windows. Single pane windows are the least effective for blocking out noise in your home. This is because they feature just a single layer of glass. In addition to allowing more noise to reach you inside your space, single-pane windows are also much less energy efficient causing you to pay more for heating and cooling bills.

Double-Pane Windows. A thicker option than single-pane windows are double-pane windows. As the name indicates, double-pane windows consist of two layers of glass as opposed to one. A space is left between the two sheets of glass and is filled with a gas which helps increase thermal insulation. In addition to noise reduction, double-pane windows are more energy efficient, allowing you to more easily regulate the temperature in your home.

Laminated Glass. Laminated glass offers an alternative to the traditional 1/8” thick glass, and is much better at blocking out noise. Simply put, laminated glass is made by having two sheets of glass that have an extra layer of vinyl in between for added protection. With this design, laminate windows are able to significantly dampen noise and minimize vibrations caused by sounds from outside.
